Show your love this Valentine’s Day

By  Walmart Green Room February 13, 2014

Valentine

For the special person or people in your life, Valentine’s Day is one of the best days of the year to show how much you care. Of course, there are the usual gift options, ranging from chocolates to jewelry to flowers, dominating shelf space in retail stores. But aside from that, the day is about romance and showing your love and affection. With plenty of good feelings to go around, why not show how much you care for the environment too. Here are a few ways to get you started:

  • Rethink roses. Roses are the signature flower of romance and the go-to for Valentine’s Day bouquets, but they often travel a long distance. Instead, consider giving a beautiful local plant or even seedlings. Not only will you impress with your knowledge of local fauna, but you’ll be giving a gift that will last through the season and beyond.
  • Go for a stroll. One of the best ways to show you care is to spend time with the person you love. Taking a long walk in a beautiful setting is just one way to do just that. If you live somewhere where restaurants, movie theatres, or anywhere else you’d like to celebrate the holiday are within walking distance, then use that time to take a walk so the two of you can experience a different type of “alone time.” Any time you can avoid getting into your car will spare the air and help the environment.
  • Make dinner together. Restaurants can be so crowded – and expensive – around Valentine’s Day. Make it less stressful – and greener – by staying in and cooking a lovely organic meal together. Bonus points if you can get meat or vegetables from local farmers.
  • Do it yourself. Make your own card for your special someone using items around the house. It’ll bring you back to your childhood, and give you a chance to make something personal. And if you’re not the crafty type, look for a card made from recycled paper.

Of course, the focus for Valentine’s Day is on the relationships in your life, but what better way to take it a step further than by showing love for the environment? Simple acts can show just how caring you can be – a perfect sentiment for this holiday.
